Nancy Reagan

On July 6, 1921, former First Lady Nancy Reagan was born. She was the wife of Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States, and spent her years at the White House as an advocate for decreasing drug and alcohol abuse.

Although known as “Nancy” throughout her life, she was born Anne Frances Robbins in Manhattan, New York to Kenneth Seymour Robbins, a farmer and car salesman, and Edith Prescott Luckett, a film and Broadway actress. Shortly after her birth, Reagan’s parents divorced. Her mother remarried Loyal Edward Davis, a pioneering neurosurgeon, who later adopted Reagan when she was 14. She then legally changed her name to Nancy Davis.

After graduating from college, Reagan went on to pursue a career as an actress. In 1949, she met Ronald Reagan, who was then the president of the Screen Actors Guild. They married on March 4, 1952 in a simple ceremony at the Little Brown Church in California’s San Fernando Valley. The couple remained married until the President’s death in 2004.

Reagan died on March 6, 2016 of congestive heart failure. She was 94 years old.
