Ronald Reagan

On this day in 1911, Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States, was born.

Reagan was raised in a small town in Illinois. His father nicknamed him “Dutch” as a small boy because he thought his son resembled a “fat little Dutchman.”

Before entering politics, Reagan was a successful actor. He began his entertainment career in radio before transitioning to film. During World War II, Regan served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Disqualified from combat due to poor eyesight, Reagan spent his time during the war appearing in training and propaganda films.

In 1981, Reagan was sworn in as the 40th President of the United States. Reagan would serve two terms in office and earn the nickname “the Great Communicator” for his ability to connect with the American public.

Reagan died on June 5, 2004 at the age of 93 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. At the time of his death, Reagan was the longest-lived president in U.S. history.
