Profile of the Day: Paul Newman

On this day in 1925, actor Paul Newman was born.

Newman was born on January 26, 1925 in Cleveland, Ohio to Arthur Sigmund Newman, Sr. and Theresa Fetzko. His father owned a sporting-goods store and was the son of Jewish emigrants from Hungary and Poland. His mother was born in what is today Humenné, Slovakia and was a homemaker with a love for the theater. As a child, Newman showed an early interest in theater and got his start acting in school plays. While in college, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a radio operator during World War II.

After the war, Newman pursued a career as an actor. In 1953, he made his Broadway debut in the comedy Picnic. It was during the show’s production that he first met his future wife, Joanne Woodward. They eventually married in 1958 and remained married for 50 years until his death in 2008.

A versatile actor, Newman starred in a variety of films, including Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Sting. He was a ten-time Oscar nominee with one win for Best Actor for his role in the 1986 sports drama, The Color of Money.
