Happy birthday to Robert Redford! Today the actor turns 84.

Charles Robert Redford, Jr. was born on August 18, 1936 in Santa Monica, California to Charles Robert Redford, Sr. and Martha Hart.

Redford began his career on the stage and television before launching to stardom in the Paul Newman film, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Since then, he has starred in many blockbuster and critical hits, including The Way We Were and The Sting. Also a gifted director, Redford won his first Academy Award for Best Director for the film Ordinary People. In addition to his onscreen work, Redford is also the founder of the Sundance Film Festival, which helps to showcase the work of independent filmmakers.

In 2016, Redford was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.
