Recognized as one of the most innovative writers of his generation, Crane began writing at the age of 4 and had published several articles by the age of 16.
In 1895, Crane published what would become his most acclaimed novel, The Red Badge of Courage. Taking place during the American Civil War, the story follows a young private in the Union Army who flees from the battlefield. Ashamed of his cowardice, the private longs for a wound, a “red badge of courage.” Although Crane was born after the war, the novel was applauded for its realism and psychological portrayal of fear.
Crane died on June 5, 1900 at the age of 28. At the time of his death, he was considered to be a significant figure in American literature.
