Born Albert Francis Charles Augustus Emmanuel of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, the Prince was the second son of Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, and his first wife, Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg.

In 1840, he married his first cousin, Queen Victoria, who had inherited the English throne just a few years earlier at the age of 18. Together, the couple had nine children, all of whom survived to adulthood. During their marriage, the Prince became one of the Queen’s most trusted advisors and adopted many public causes, including the organization of the Great Exhibition of 1851.

When he died at the age of 42, the Queen plunged into an overwhelming grief and avoided public appearances. She would wear black in mourning for the rest of her life.
