Profile of the Day: Queen Victoria

Today we remember Queen Victoria, who died on January 22, 1901. Her 63-year reign is frequently referred to as the Victorian era and was a period of great expansion, prosperity, and advancement.

At the time of her birth, she was fifth in the line of succession. Her father died in 1820, the same year as her grandfather, King George III. After the death of her father’s three older brothers, who each died with no legitimate heirs, Victoria inherited the throne at the age of 18.

She married her first cousin, Prince Albert, in 1840 and had nine children. Each child married into royal and noble families across Europe, earning her the nickname “the grandmother of Europe.”

Upon her death in 1901, she was succeeded by her son, Edward VII.
