On this day in 1756, composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria.

Mozart was the only surviving son of Leopold Mozart and Anna Maria Pertl. He and his older sister, Maria Anna, were the only two of seven children to survive past infancy. His father had been a composer, conductor, and teacher. The year of Mozart’s birth, his father published his famous violin textbook, which was very influential in its day.

Mozart was a child prodigy. During his childhood, his family traveled on a long concert tour throughout Europe. where he and his sister performed at the courts of Paris, London, Munich, and Zurich. At the age of 8, he wrote his first symphony. By the time of his death at the age of 35, he had composed over 600 pieces.

Considered one of the greatest composers of his time, Mozart’s name and talent was well known throughout Europe. Today, he remains one of the most important and influential classical composers in history.
