RootsTech 2020 Highlights

We’re back from RootsTech 2020 where we had a fantastic time meeting new people, seeing old friends, and connecting with Geni users. This year thousands of people came together at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah to celebrate the 10th anniversary of RootsTech. Since making its debut 10 years ago, RootsTech has become the largest genealogy gathering in the world.

During the first days of the conference, the Geni booth was packed with people. Many stopped by to learn more about how collaboration works on Geni and how it differs from other similar services. Each computer station at the booth was equipped with free access to all of Geni’s premium features and MyHeritage’s SuperSearch database of historical records and family trees. It was the perfect opportunity for users to check out their Record Matches and Smart Matches for free.

Geni staff and curators were on hand to chat with attendees and provide one-on-one assistance to Geni users. This year we were joined by curators Randy Stebbing and Dan Cornett, who were happy to answer questions and talk to attendees about Geni’s World Family Tree. As Geni experts, they were also helpful in connecting new users to the World Family Tree right at the booth!

On Friday, we gave a special demo, “Getting the Most Out of Geni’s World Family Tree,” at the MyHeritage booth in their live demo theater. Many in the audience were MyHeritage users who were only familiar with Geni through MyHeritage’s Record Matches or Theories of Family Relativity. Attendees were happy to have the chance to learn more about some of the great features on Geni and ask questions about working in the World Family Tree.

We also heard lots of great stories from Geni users who have found valuable information and new relatives on Geni. Several attendees stopped by throughout the conference to get help connecting their branch to the World Family Tree. After helping an attendee merge a duplicate profile for her second great grandmother, she discovered the profile’s co-manager was her second cousin once removed. Others were fascinated with our free DNA features provided in partnership with Family Tree DNA. In just a few short steps, attendees were able to quickly connect their Family Tree DNA test results to their Geni accounts and see new DNA matches on Geni.

We had a great time at RootsTech and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year at RootsTech 2021!
