Carter was born on October 1, 1924 in Plains, Georgia to Bessie Lilian Gordie, a nurse, and James Earl Carter, Sr., a peanut farmer and businessman.
In 1977, Carter was sworn in as the 39th President of the United States. Carter’s presidency was plagued by difficulties both at home and abroad. He served only one term in office, losing his re-election bid to Ronald Reagan.
After leaving office, Carter became known for his work as a diplomat and advocate for human rights. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Even in his advanced age, Carter continues to volunteer his time building houses with Habitat for Humanity, which he and his wife have served as volunteers for over 35 years.
